Matheran Hill Station is a charming and eco-sensitive hill station located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, about 90 kilometers from Mumbai. It is one of the smallest hill stations in India and is set at an elevation of around 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level. The name "Matheran" means "forest on the forehead" in Marathi, reflecting its lush, natural beauty and forested surroundings.
Matheran is renowned for being Asia's only automobile-free hill station, making it a peaceful and pollution-free destination. Visitors can explore this picturesque town on foot, by hiring hand-pulled rickshaws, or enjoying a pony ride. The hill station was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane, in 1850. It was later developed into a summer retreat for British officers during colonial times.
