Mathikettan Shola National Park

Mathikettan Shola National Park is a small but ecologically significant protected area in the Poopara village of Idukki district, Kerala, covering about 12.82 square kilometers. Established as a national park in 2003, its name comes from a Tamil word meaning "mind-confuser" because its dense and winding forest trails often make visitors lose their way.

This park is known for its unique shola forests, which are patches of stunted evergreen trees found in valleys and folds of the hills, interspersed with grasslands, creating a special habitat for diverse flora and fauna. It serves as an important elephant corridor and is home to species such as elephants, tigers, panthers, Nilgiri tahrs, wild boars, and various endemic birds like the golden-headed cisticola.

The park’s cool climate, waterfalls, streams, and rich biodiversity attract nature lovers, trekkers, and wildlife photographers. It lies between other protected areas like Eravikulam National Park and Pampadam Shola National Park, contributing to a larger ecosystem in the Western Ghats. Visitors can explore trails, enjoy stunning views, and experience the serene environment, with the best visiting period being the dry season from October to March. Nearby towns like Munnar and Poopara provide easy access, with facilities for eco-tourism and nature-based activities.
