Metcalfe Hall
Historical Landmark
Metcalfe Hall
Metcalfe Hall, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is a heritage building that reflects British imperial architecture from the mid-19th century. Constructed between 1840 and 1844, it was named after Sir Charles T. Metcalfe, the Governor-General of India, in recognition of his efforts toward a free press.
The building, designed by city magistrate C.K. Robinson, resembles a Greek temple with its grand Corinthian pillars and neoclassical style. Originally, Metcalfe Hall housed the Calcutta Public Library, which contained thousands of books transferred from the College of Fort William. Today, the ground floor is used by the Asiatic Society for rare foreign journals and manuscripts, while the first floor hosts offices, exhibition galleries, and a sales counter for the Archaeological Survey of India.
The National Gallery of Modern Art has proposed transforming Metcalfe Hall into a museum of modern art, further enhancing its cultural significance.
