Mormugao Fort, built in 1624, is one of the most significant coastal forts in Goa. Located near Vasco Da Gama town, just south of Mormugao Port, the fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese to protect the harbor.
The fort covered an area of six miles in circumference and featured towering bulwarks, three magazines, five prisons, a chapel, and quarters for the guards. It was equipped with 53 guns and had a garrison with four officers, making it a formidable defense structure. Historically, the Portuguese considered shifting the capital of Portuguese India to Mormugao due to frequent plagues and attacks in Old Goa.
However, the high costs led to the abandonment of this plan. The fort was later lost to the Marathas in 1737, and by the 19th century, Panjim became the new capital.
