Nalbana Bird Sanctuary
Nalbana Bird Sanctuary, located on Nalbana Island in Chilika Lake, Puri, Odisha, covers an area of about 15.53 square kilometers. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1972 and is a core area of the Ramsar-designated wetlands of Chilika Lake, India's largest brackish water lagoon. The island completely submerges during the monsoon and emerges again post-monsoon, attracting thousands of resident and migratory birds.
Nalbana is famous for hosting large flocks of greater flamingos, lesser flamingos, herons, egrets, spoonbills, storks, black-headed ibis, and rare species such as the spoon-billed sandpiper and dalmatian pelican. It is a vital habitat for over 160 bird species, including several vulnerable and endangered birds, making it a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers especially in winter when migratory birds flock here.
