The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi, established in 1954, is India's premier art gallery functioning under the Ministry of Culture. It is housed in Jaipur House, a butterfly-shaped heritage building originally built in 1936 as the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield.
NGMA displays an extensive collection of over 17,000 artworks by more than 2,000 artists, including prominent figures such as Raja Ravi Verma, Amrita Sher-Gil, and Rabindranath Tagore, spanning Indian modern art from the mid-19th century onward. The gallery opened with exhibitions focusing on contemporary Indian sculpture and has continually expanded, adding new wings in 2009 to increase exhibition and educational spaces, including auditoriums, libraries, and conservation laboratories.
