Nedumkotta
Nedumkotta, also known as the Travancore Lines, was a massive fortification built in the 18th century in what is now Thrissur, Kerala, to protect the kingdom of Travancore from invasions, especially by Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Stretching about 48 kilometers, it incorporated natural features like hills, rivers, and dense forests with man-made defenses such as deep trenches, high bamboo hedges, ramparts, and bastions.
The fortification effectively guarded the northern border of Travancore, serving as a critical stronghold in the region's military history. Its strategic location from the Arabian Sea to the Western Ghats helped repel Mysore's forces during multiple battles, notably wounding Tipu Sultan and thwarting his expansion into southern Kerala. Although only ruins remain today, Nedumkotta is remembered as a unique and formidable defense line, sometimes compared to the Great Wall of China for its scale and purpose in protecting the kingdom.
