Located near Swargate and Sarasbaug, it was built to bring international cricket to Pune and served as the home ground for the Maharashtra Cricket Team until 2012.

The stadium is best known for hosting 11 One Day Internationals, including matches in both the 1987 and 1996 Cricket World Cups, and it witnessed one of cricket’s most famous upsets when Kenya defeated the West Indies in 1996. While the pitch is traditionally flat and suited to batsmen, Nehru Stadium remains a landmark of the city’s sporting history, even as most major matches have moved to the newer Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on the city’s outskirts.
