Neveh Shalome Synagogue
Neveh Shalome Synagogue is located in Kolkata, West Bengal, rather than Howrah. Established in 1831 by Shalom Obadiah ha-Kohen, it is the oldest synagogue in Kolkata and holds historical significance as the first Jewish community house of prayer in India.
The synagogue is situated in China Bazar, adjacent to the Magen David Synagogue. Over the years, it has undergone multiple demolitions and reconstructions, with a major restoration completed in 2014. The synagogue features elegant interiors and continues to conduct regular prayers, despite the diminished local Jewish population.
Unlike other synagogues in Kolkata, such as Beth El and Magen David, which are under the custodianship of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Neveh Shalome remains Jewish-owned.
