New Bor Wildlife Sanctuary
New Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Bor Tiger Reserve, is located near Hingani in Wardha district of Maharashtra. Established originally as a sanctuary and declared a tiger reserve in July 2014, it covers an area of about 138 square kilometers, including the Bor Dam's drainage basin.
The sanctuary features dry deciduous forests with teak, ain, tendu, and bamboo as prominent plant species, alongside a variety of medicinal plants. It provides a habitat for diverse wildlife including Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, Indian bisons (gaur), blue bulls (nilgai), several species of deer like chital and sambar, sloth bears, wild boars, and wild dogs.
Over 160 bird species, including migratory and rare birds, live here, along with more than 26 reptile species like Indian cobra and Russell's viper. The sanctuary is physically divided by the Bor Reservoir into two parts, with the western part mostly in Wardha and the eastern in Nagpur district. It acts as a vital tiger breeding ground and is supported by active conservation efforts that have helped increase the tiger population.
Visitors can experience the sanctuary in a designated eco-tourism zone, with the best visiting season being from October to May. The sanctuary is also part of a network of protected tiger habitats in the region, linked with larger reserves like Pench Tiger Reserve. The overall environment combines lush forest, grasslands, and water bodies creating a rich biodiversity hotspot. Wildlife viewing and nature tourism are key activities promoted to raise awareness and appreciation of this natural heritage. The sanctuary is closed on Mondays for conservation management.
The nearest airport is Nagpur, approximately 80 km away, and the nearest railway station is Wardha, about 35 km from the sanctuary. Basic accommodations and medical facilities are available nearby. This sanctuary represents a crucial effort in India’s wildlife protection, especially for the endangered Bengal tiger.
