New Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the larger Nawegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, is located in the Gondia district of Maharashtra. This sanctuary complements the older Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, collectively forming a critical habitat for Bengal tigers and other wildlife in the region.
Covering a significant area, it is characterized by southern tropical dry deciduous forests dominated by teak, bamboo, and a variety of hardwoods, offering a rich environment for diverse flora and fauna. The sanctuary supports a range of mammals including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaurs, sambar, nilgai, chital, and wild boars, along with over 166 bird species and numerous reptiles and amphibians.
As part of the tiger reserve, New Nagzira plays an essential role in tiger conservation, habitat protection, and maintaining ecological balance. The area is accessible to visitors for wildlife safaris and nature experiences, making it an important destination for eco-tourism and wildlife research in central India.
