Oussudu Bird Sanctuary, also known as Ousteri Bird Sanctuary, is the first and only wildlife sanctuary in Puducherry, established in 2008 around the Ousteri Lake. The sanctuary covers about 390 acres in Puducherry, with the lake's total area shared between Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.
It serves as a critical habitat for around 200 bird species, including approximately 40 migratory ones that arrive each year after November, such as painted storks, white ibis, golden orioles, and openbill storks. The sanctuary's environment consists of wetlands, marshes, and mudflats that support a rich variety of flora and fauna, providing crucial ecological benefits and livelihood options for nearby communities.
Despite facing threats like bird poaching, the sanctuary is recognized as a significant wetland of national and international importance, designated as an Important Bird Area and listed among Asia's vital wetlands by the IUCN. It is a popular spot for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts due to its rich biodiversity and scenic beauty.
