Pangong Tso

Pangong Tso, often called Pangong Lake, is a breathtaking high-altitude lake nestled in the Himalayas, straddling the border between India and China. Located at an elevation of about 4,350 meters, it stretches over 134 kilometers, with roughly 60% of its length lying in Tibet and the rest in Ladakh, India.

The lake is renowned for its surreal beauty and its ability to change colors—from deep blue to turquoise and even shades of green—depending on the time of day and the angle of sunlight. Despite being a saline water lake, Pangong Tso freezes completely during the harsh winter months, transforming into a vast icy expanse. Its surroundings are stark yet stunning, with rugged mountains and minimal vegetation, creating a dramatic contrast to the shimmering waters.

The lake is also a haven for migratory birds such as Brahminy ducks and seagulls, adding life to its otherwise tranquil setting. Pangong Tso gained immense popularity after being featured in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots, which showcased its ethereal charm and sparked a surge in tourism. Visitors often camp near the lake, stargaze under the clear Himalayan skies, and soak in the serenity that defines this remote paradise.
