Pansal Fort
Pansal Fort, also known as Panhalgad or Panhalla, stands proudly in the Sahyadri mountain range, approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. Pansal Fort occupies a strategic position, overlooking a crucial pass in the Sahyadri mountains.
This pass served as a major trade route connecting Bijapur (in the interior of Maharashtra) to the coastal areas. Built between 1178 and 1209 CE, Pansal Fort was one of the 15 forts constructed by the Shilahara ruler Bhoja II.
The fort's name, when translated, means "the home of serpents." It is associated with the aphorism: "Kahaan Raja Bhoj, kahan Gangu Teli."
After Bhoja II, the fort passed into the hands of the powerful Devgiri Yadavas under Singhana. Over time, it changed ownership, including periods under the Bahamanis of Bidar and the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur.
The Adil Shahis extensively fortified the fort, constructing its strong ramparts and gateways. Pansal Fort witnessed several skirmishes involving the Marathas, Mughals, and the British East India Company. The Battle of Pavan Khind was a significant conflict here.
Pansal Fort's layout is distinctive, resembling a zigzag pattern. Locals often refer to it as the "Fort of Snakes."
Discussions are underway to transform Fort Pansal into a 40-room, highly-exclusive 5-star deluxe hotel overlooking Lake Pansal. This historical gem continues to captivate visitors with its rich past and scenic vistas.
