Panshet Dam, also known as Tanajisagar Dam, is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Pune, Maharashtra. Constructed in the late 1950s, it was built for irrigation purposes and, along with Varasgaon, Temghar, and Khadakwasla dams, supplies drinking water to Pune.
The dam is an earthen structure with a height of 63.56 meters (208.5 feet) and a length of 1,039 meters (3,409 feet). Unfortunately, the dam experienced a catastrophic failure in its first year of operation on July 12, 1961, causing massive flooding in Pune and resulting in significant loss of life.
Despite its tragic history, Panshet Dam is now a popular spot for picnics, boating, and other water sports. The surrounding area is lush and green, especially during the monsoon season, making it a beautiful destination for nature lovers.
