The site has ancient roots, originally being a major Jain center before becoming a place for Hindu worship, with its religious significance dating back over a thousand years. In the 13th century, the Khichi Chauhan Rajputs, a branch of the Chavda Rajputs, established a hilltop fortress here, and the area flourished as a Hindu capital, later falling to Sultan Mahmud Begada of Gujarat in 1484 after a prolonged siege, leading to a blend of architectural and cultural influences including mosques and Mughal-style structures alongside older temples.
Today, Pavagadh and Champaner together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving their unique landscape and rich tradition as a living symbol of Gujarat’s layered history.
