Pettah of Ahmednagar
The Pettah of Ahmednagar was a fortified town adjacent to the Ahmednagar Fort, located to the west of the fort. In the early 19th century, it had around forty bastions, including eight large ones armed with two guns each, and twelve gates without detached defenses. The walls were made of mud and stood about 10 feet high, without a surrounding ditch.
The Pettah was connected to water sources through covered aqueducts from nearby hills, which supplied water to the town and the fort. Historically, the Pettah served as an important settlement for the military defense of Ahmednagar and was strategically positioned beside the fort, with the main gate of the fort facing it. It played a role in the defense of the region during various conflicts, including the Second Anglo-Maratha War when it was taken by the British in 1803.
The Pettah was surrounded by rivers and streams that added to its defensive advantages and was closely linked with the fort both historically and geographically.
