Phillaur Fort

Phillaur Fort, also known as Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort, stands as a striking red-brick sentinel on the banks of the Sutlej River in Ludhiana district, Punjab. Originally built in the 17th century as a Mughal sarai under Emperor Shah Jahan, it was transformed into a European-style military fortress in 1809 by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire.

The fort’s architecture reflects a blend of Mughal and European influences, with bastions, watchtowers, and inward-sloping walls designed to deflect artillery fire. Its strategic location along the Grand Trunk Road made it a vital military outpost, especially during the Anglo-Sikh conflicts. After the British annexation of Punjab in 1849, the fort was repurposed as an artillery base and later became India’s first Police Training Academy in 1891.

Today, it continues to function as the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy, preserving its legacy as both a historical monument and a living institution. Within its walls lies the shrine of Pir Baba Abdullah Shah Ji, adding a spiritual dimension to its military past. Visitors can explore its museum, which showcases antique weapons, manuscripts, and relics from the Sikh era, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage.
