Pratapgad
Pratapgad is a historic mountain fort located in the Satara district of Maharashtra, about 24 kilometers from the hill station Mahabaleshwar. Built in 1656 by the Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj and his prime minister Moropant Trimbak Pingle, the fort was strategically established to defend the banks of the Nira and Koyna rivers and control the Par Pass.
Pratapgad is famous for the Battle of Pratapgad fought in 1659 between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, a general of the Bijapur Sultanate, marking a key moment in Maratha history. The fort sits at about 1,080 meters above sea level and is divided into an upper and lower fort, with temples including the Bhavani Temple and a statue of Shivaji Maharaj. It features sturdy bastions, watchtowers, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Western Ghats. Today, Pratapgad is a popular tourist destination known for its combination of historical significance, architectural brilliance, and natural beauty.
