Qila Rai Pithora or Lal Kot
Qila Rai Pithora, also known as Lal Kot, is a historic fortified complex in South Delhi considered the first city of Delhi. It was built in the 11th century by Tomar ruler Anangpal Tomar and expanded in the 12th century by the Rajput king Prithviraj Chauhan, also known as Rai Pithora.
The fort once enclosed massive walls and served as the capital during the Chauhan dynasty's rule, with construction encompassing palaces, temples, and military fortifications around what is now the Qutb Minar complex. Only remnants of the extensive walls are visible today across areas including Mehrauli, Saket, and Vasant Kunj.
The fort has major historical significance as the site of political and military activity before the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate after Prithviraj Chauhan’s defeat in 1192 AD. It provides a glimpse into Delhi’s early urban and cultural heritage amidst the sprawling modern city.
