Quwwatul Islam Masjid

Quwwatul Islam Masjid, located in the historic Mehrauli area of New Delhi, is one of the earliest mosques built in India, dating back to the late 12th century. Commissioned by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, this mosque holds immense historical significance as it marks the beginning of Islamic architecture in the Indian subcontinent.

Constructed using the remains of temples from earlier Hindu and Jain traditions, the mosque is an outstanding example of architectural fusion, showcasing a blend of Islamic and indigenous Indian styles. The intricate carvings and inscriptions on its pillars and walls reflect the craftsmanship of artisans who adapted their skills to new artistic expressions under the Delhi Sultanate.

The mosque forms an integral part of the Qutb Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which also houses the iconic Qutb Minar.
