Fort
Rajgad
Rajgad Fort, located in Pune district, Maharashtra, was the first capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and served as his stronghold for nearly 26 years before the capital was moved to Raigad.
The fort, originally known as Murumbdev, stands about 1,376 meters above sea level in the Sahyadri range and covers a vast area with ruins of palaces, water tanks, and caves. It has a strategic location with a base diameter of around 40 kilometers, making sieges difficult. Rajgad witnessed numerous historic events such as the birth of Shivaji’s son Rajaram, the death of Shivaji’s wife Saibai, and Shivaji’s return from Agra.
The fort is divided into sections like Padmavati Machi, Sanjivani Machi, Suvela Machi, and the highest point Balekilla (Citadel), each with its architectural and strategic significance. Today, Rajgad is a popular trekking destination known for its scenic views, historic importance, and the best time to visit is during the post-monsoon season.
