Ramshej Fort, also known as Ramsej Fort, is a small historical fort located about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) northwest of Nashik, Maharashtra. The fort is situated on the Nashik-Peth Road at an altitude of 3,273 feet (1,000 meters).
It is one of the popular monsoon trekking spots in the region.
The fort has a rich history, having been attacked by Aurangzeb's army after the death of Shivaji Maharaj. It was one of the 17 strongholds that resisted the attacks for almost six years under the leadership of Shivaji's son, Sambhaji.
Ramshej Fort was later surrendered to the British in 1818 CE.
The fort is believed to have been named after Lord Rama, who is said to have made this place his residence during his exile. The trek to the fort starts from Aashewadi Village, and it takes about an hour to reach the top. En route, there is a small temple of Lord Ram inside a cave, and the cave is well maintained by devotees.
The fort offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges and vast plains.
