Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary

Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary in Dahod district, Gujarat, is a protected area established in 1982, known primarily for harboring the highest population of sloth bears in the state. The sanctuary lies near the tribal towns of Baria in Dahod and Chhota Udepur in Vadodara district, bordering Madhya Pradesh, where the sloth bear's habitat extends.

Its terrain is rugged with a hill station-like feel, featuring dry teak forests at the foothills, mixed deciduous forests, dry bamboo brakes, and pure patches of timru and sadad trees. The dense forest cover includes a significant population of mahuda and jamun trees, which provide food for the sloth bears. Besides sloth bears, the sanctuary hosts a variety of wildlife such as leopards, hyenas, jackals, antelopes, civets, jungle cats, and numerous bird species.

The sanctuary's forests also form the catchment area of the Panam river, making it ecologically important for water conservation. It offers a unique opportunity to observe sloth bear behavior and supports diverse flora and fauna amidst its rich, natural setting, making it a notable wildlife destination in Central Gujarat.
