Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple
The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as the Leaning Temple of Varanasi, is one of the most photographed temples in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Located at Manikarnika Ghat, the temple is famous for its distinct tilt, leaning at about a nine-degree angle. The temple's garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) is often submerged underwater during the monsoon season.
According to legend, the temple was built by a servant of Raja Man Singh in memory of his mother, Ratna Bai. Another legend suggests that it was built by Ratna Bai, a servant of Ahilya Bai Holkar, who cursed the temple to lean because it was named after her.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also known as Matri-rin Mahadev (Mother's Debt) because of the legend that a mother's debt can never be fully repaid.
