Sadashivgad Fort, located in Karwar, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, is a historic fort perched on a hill overlooking the Kali River. Built in 1715 by Basavlingraj, the fort was named after his father, Sadashivlingraj, and played a significant role in regional history.
The fort was constructed on an old fortified site with 8-meter-high ramparts, towers, and openings for guns, making it a strategic defense structure. The citadel, positioned at the highest point, had a single arched gateway, while additional outworks were built near the sea and on the eastern slope. Historically, the area was known as Cintacora and was a trading center before the fort was built.
The Portuguese captured and burned an earlier fort in 1510, calling it Pir Fort due to the presence of a Muslim dargah. Later, in 1665, Shivaji conquered Sadashivgad, marking its importance in Maratha history.
