Saman Bird Sanctuary
Saman Bird Sanctuary in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, is a protected wetland spanning about 5.25 square kilometers, centered around a seasonal oxbow lake on the Ganges floodplain. Notified in 1990 to protect the large population of sarus cranes, it serves as a crucial habitat for over 50,000 waterbirds during winter, including migratory species like the greylag goose.
The sanctuary hosts around 187 bird species, including vulnerable species such as the sarus crane and the greater spotted eagle. It also supports mammals like the nilgai and reptiles such as the Bengal monitor lizard. Besides being a biodiversity hotspot, the wetland plays an essential role in groundwater recharge and supports nature-based tourism and wildlife observation.
The best time to visit is between November and February when the bird activity is highest.
