Sanquelim Fort, located in the bustling town of Sanquelim in North Goa, is a 17th-century fort that once played a crucial role in the defense of trade routes from the ghats to Goa's coastal areas. Positioned on the eastern bank of the town by the River Valvanti, the fort controlled shipping trade and helped safeguard the region, with cannons mounted to guard the passage.
It was taken over by the Portuguese in 1746 from the Bhonsles, and for many years it housed cannons and served as a local command center. Over time, the structure fell into ruin and became encroached upon by shops, with only parts of the skirting wall, a crumbling bastion, some steps, and a rectangular well still visible.
Although it is not a major tourist spot and remains in a dilapidated state, recent efforts have begun to restore Sanquelim Fort, signaling a renewed interest in preserving this piece of Goan heritage for future generations.
