Santhome Cathedral Basilica
The Santhome Cathedral Basilica, also known as the St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Thomas, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in the Santhome neighborhood of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
The present structure dates back to 1523 AD, when it was built by the Portuguese over the tomb of Thomas the Apostle. In 1896, it was renovated in the Madras province according to neo-Gothic designs, favored by British architects of the late 19th century.
The basilica is one of only three churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle, the others being St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain. The church is known for its stunning architecture, with white texture and tall spires, naturally lit interiors, rows of wooden pews, and striking windows with colored panes.
The main area, called the nave, holds awe-inspiring chandeliers, and behind the main altar, there are stained glass windows depicting St. Thomas and other apostles of Jesus Christ.
