Shree Shantadurga Mandir, located in Kavlem, North Goa, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga, who is believed to mediate between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
This temple holds immense spiritual and cultural significance, especially for the Goud Saraswat Brahmin community. Originally situated in Keloshi, the temple was relocated to Kavlem during the Portuguese rule in the 16th century to protect it from destruction.
The current structure, built between 1713 and 1738 under the patronage of the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, showcases a blend of traditional Hindu and Roman architectural styles.
The temple complex features a striking pyramidal roof, a dome, and a deepstambha (lamp tower), along with a large water tank. The idol of Goddess Shantadurga is depicted holding two serpents, symbolizing her role as a mediator.
The temple is also surrounded by smaller shrines dedicated to other deities, enhancing its spiritual ambiance. Festivals like Navaratri and Jatrautsav are celebrated here with great fervor, drawing devotees from across the region.
