Sinhagad
Sinhagad is an ancient hill fortress located about 30 to 35 kilometers southwest of Pune, Maharashtra, perched atop a hill roughly 1,320 meters above sea level. Formerly known as Kondhana, it has a history spanning over 2,000 years and has seen control by various dynasties before becoming a key stronghold of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The fort is most famous for the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670, where the valiant Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare led a daring night assault to recapture the fort from the Mughals, sacrificing his life in the process. In his honor, Shivaji renamed the fort "Sinhagad," meaning “Lion’s Fort.” The fort features steep slopes for natural defense, two main gates Pune darwaja and Kalyan darwaja watchtowers, bastions, temples including a shrine for Tanaji, and historic water reservoirs.
It offers panoramic views of surrounding forts and lush landscapes, making it a popular spot for trekking, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Sinhagad remains a symbol of Maratha bravery and heritage.
