Siri Fort
Siri Fort, located in South Delhi, was built around 1303 by Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of the Khilji dynasty, as a defensive stronghold against frequent Mongol invasions. It was part of the second city of medieval Delhi, known as Siri, and was strategically positioned about 5 km northeast of the Qutub Minar. The fort was constructed with massive rubble masonry walls and had several gates, of which only the southeastern gate remains today. Siri Fort was famous for housing the grand palace of a thousand pillars called Hazar Sutan, adorned with marble floors and intricate decorations.
The fort and its surrounding city served as the administrative and military center of Khilji’s rule, reflecting advanced Afghan-Seljuk architectural influences. Over time, the fort fell into ruin due to neglect and the reuse of its materials by later rulers, but today its remnants serve as a historical reminder of Delhi's medieval past and the Khilji dynasty’s architectural and military legacy.
