Sohagi Barwa Wildlife Sanctuary
Sohagi Barwa Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh near the India-Nepal border, covers about 428 square kilometers. Established in 1987, the sanctuary features mostly flat terrain averaging 100 meters in elevation, gently sloping from northwest to southeast. It is drained by rivers including the Gandak and Rohin.
The landscape consists largely of sal forests covering roughly 75% of the area, with other vegetation like jamun, semal, and khair trees, while lower regions become waterlogged during rains, featuring grasslands and cane patches. The sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife such as Bengal tigers, leopards, cheetals, bears, jungle cats, wild boars, Indian civets, langurs, and nilgais, along with a rich variety of bird species including cormorants, egrets, ducks, kingfishers, vultures, and many others.
It provides important habitat for both resident and migratory birds and supports reptiles like pythons, cobras, and crocodiles. The climate is temperate with mild winters, making it suitable for year-round visitation.
The sanctuary is divided into seven forest ranges, which include notable grasslands and ponds, making it a significant site for wildlife conservation and eco-tourism in the Terai ecosystem of northern India. Visitors can enjoy wildlife safaris, birdwatching, and nature walks in this tranquil yet ecologically rich environment.
