Songadh Fort, Tapi district
Songadh Fort is a 16th to early 18th-century fort located in Songadh town of Tapi district, Gujarat, near the Tapi River and Ukai Dam, at an elevation of 112 meters. It was built by Pillaji Rao Gaekwad, the founder of the Gaekwad dynasty, between 1721 and 1766 after capturing it from the local Bhil rulers.
The fort was deliberately constructed on top of a high hill to serve as a vantage point for monitoring enemy movements and controlling the surrounding region. Architecturally, Songadh Fort reflects a blend of Mughal and Maratha influences, showcasing the military and aesthetic styles of that period. It served as the main station and headquarters for the Gaekwad rulers until 1766, playing an important role in their consolidation of power.
Today, the fort is a local tourist spot, partially restored, with ongoing development efforts including better roads, a lake, and visitor facilities. The trek to the fort is relatively easy and short, making it accessible to visitors who can also enjoy views of the town and surrounding natural beauty from the ruins. Only one tower near the main gate remains largely intact, while other structures are in ruins due to lack of maintenance and quarrying around the site.
