South Brother Island Wildlife Sanctuary
South Brother Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area established in 1987 on South Brother Island in South Andaman, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The sanctuary covers about 1.24 square kilometers of an uninhabited, bean-shaped island located in the Indian Ocean, about 9.5 kilometers northeast of Little Andaman Island in the Duncan Passage.
The island is mostly flat, densely forested, fringed by a narrow beach and surrounded by coral reefs, with a central depression that forms a seasonal lake during the rainy season. This wildlife sanctuary was created to conserve the rich biodiversity of the region, which includes rare flora and fauna native to the Andaman Islands. Historically, it was visited by the Onge tribe for sea turtle hunting, adding cultural significance to its ecological importance.
Access is limited, helping to preserve its pristine natural environment as an untouched haven for wildlife and a representation of the unique ecosystems found in the Andaman Islands.
