Srirangapatna is a historic town located near Mysuru (Mysore), Karnataka, on an island formed by the Kaveri River. It holds immense historical, cultural, and religious significance. One of the main attractions is the Ranganathaswamy Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, built around 984 CE. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in South India.
The town is also home to the Srirangapatna Fort, originally built in 1454 and later fortified by Tipu Sultan. The fort played a crucial role in the Anglo-Mysore Wars. Another notable site is Tipu Sultan's Palace, the summer palace of Tipu Sultan, which now houses a museum showcasing artifacts from his era.
The Gumbaz, a mausoleum of Tipu Sultan and his family, is known for its impressive architecture. Colonel Bailey's Dungeon is an underground prison where British officers were held during the Anglo-Mysore Wars.
