St. Angelo Fort, also known as Kannur Fort or Kannur Kotta, is a historic coastal fort located in Kannur, Kerala. Built in 1505 by the Portuguese Viceroy Dom Francisco de Almeida with the consent of the local Kolathiri Raja, it served as a strategic military stronghold protecting maritime trade routes.
The fort is uniquely triangular in shape, constructed from laterite stone, and features imposing bastions, a moat, and a lighthouse believed to be Kannur’s first. Over centuries, the fort was captured and modified by the Dutch and later the British, who used it as a military base.
Today, it is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, offering visitors stunning views of the Arabian Sea, Mappila Bay, and Dharmadam Island, as well as a glimpse into Kerala’s colonial history and architectural heritage. Its blend of Portuguese and Dutch designs and its scenic location make it a popular historical and cultural attraction.
