St. John's Church in Vellore is a historic church located within the Vellore Fort in Tamil Nadu, built in 1846 for the officers and soldiers of the East India Company stationed there. It features a blend of classical exterior and English Gothic architectural style, with a nave measuring approximately 50 by 41 feet and a seating capacity for around 280 people. The church was designed and constructed by Major C.G. Ottley, the Fort Adjutant, at a cost of about Rs. 5,559.
Despite being named after St. John the Evangelist, the church was never officially consecrated, partly because it was originally used for secular entertainment like dancing and acting. The church's history traces back to earlier chapels established in the late 18th century, evolving through various phases to serve both European and native Christian congregations.
Today, it stands as the oldest existing church in the Vellore Diocese and retains historic features such as memorial windows and carvings, reflecting its colonial and military heritage.
