Surat Castle, Surat

Surat Castle, also known as Surat Fort, is a 16th-century fortress built between 1540 and 1546 by Khudawand Khan, a Turkish soldier entrusted by Sultan Mahmud III of the Gujarat Sultanate. It was constructed on the banks of the Tapi River to protect Surat, a vital port city, from Portuguese attacks and other invasions.

The fort covers about one acre and has an irregular square plan with high, thick stone walls and large round bastions designed for defense. Its architecture is a blend of Indo-Islamic styles with influences from Portuguese fortifications, featuring massive ramparts, bastions, watchtowers, large gateways, arches, and intricate carvings.

Surat Castle played a key role in safeguarding the city's prosperity and trade during a dynamic historical period, seeing control under Sultanate, Mughal, and British rulers over time. Today, the well-preserved fort serves as a popular tourist destination, offering insights into Surat's historic importance and military architecture alongside panoramic views of the Tapi River.
