Suvarnadurg
Suvarnadurg is a historic sea fort located on a small island near Harnai port in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, along the Arabian Sea coast. Built in the 17th century by the Adil Shahi dynasty and later fortified and controlled by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Marathas, the fort served as a strategic naval defense point with shipbuilding facilities.
It played a key role in resisting European colonial powers and local chieftains, with its control later passing to the British after battles in the mid-18th and early 19th centuries. The fort spans about 8 acres, is surrounded by a dry moat, has two main gates—Mahadarwaja facing land and Chor Darwaja facing the sea—and features bastions, granaries, old palaces’ foundations, and 15 old cannons.
Accessible only by boat from Harnai port, Suvarnadurg remains a protected monument and stands as a symbol of Maratha maritime power and architectural ingenuity.
