Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary, located about 70 km from Pune in Maharashtra, is known for its lush biodiversity and scenic landscapes along the crest of the Western Ghats. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2013 and covers an area of around 49.62 sq km, consisting of evergreen, semi-evergreen, and deciduous forests.
The sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife including 28 mammal species like the endangered Kondana Soft-furred Rat, Indian giant squirrels (Maharashtra's state animal), barking deer, Indian pangolins, and wild boars. It also hosts around 150 bird species, including several endemic to India, along with numerous butterflies, reptiles, and other fauna.
Popular eco-tourism spots within the sanctuary include Andharban forest, Plus Valley, and Devkund, attracting trekkers, bird watchers, and nature lovers, especially during the monsoon season when the scenery is lush and waterfalls are abundant. Conservation efforts recently received support through a partnership between the Maharashtra Forest Department, Microsoft, and a Pune-based NGO to restore and protect this ecologically important area while enhancing visitor facilities and sustainable tourism.
