Tangrakottai
Tangrakottai, also known as Thenkaraikottai, is a ruined castle located near Pappireddipatti in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. Built by Seelappa Nayakkar and Chennappa Nayakkar of the Vijayanagar dynasty around the 14th century, the fort spans about 40 acres on land rather than a hill, which is unusual for forts in the region.
At its center is the Sri Kalyana Ramaswamy temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, notable for its beautiful architecture and unique feature where the main shrine houses twelve moolavars in the form of the Pattabisheka Srikolam. The fort complex includes remains of granaries, stables, cannons, and royal bathing areas.
Historically, the fort changed hands among rulers, including Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali. The temple is important culturally and spiritually, with devotees believing that Lord Rama blesses those seeking relief from life obstacles and those looking for life partners. The fort and temple are protected and maintained by the Tamil Nadu government.
