Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, located in the heart of Kerala's capital city, is one of the oldest and most well-known zoos in India. Established in 1857 by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the zoo spans over 55 acres of lush greenery, providing a natural habitat for a diverse range of animals. The zoo was initially created as an adjunct to the Napier Museum, with the aim of attracting more visitors and promoting conservation awareness.

The zoo is home to a wide variety of species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. Visitors can see indigenous species such as the lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian rhinoceros, Asiatic lion, royal Bengal tiger, and leopard. The zoo also houses exotic species like the American black bear and various types of macaws and cockatoos. One of the zoo's highlights is its large aviary, which allows birds to fly freely in a naturalistic environment, providing visitors with an immersive experience.

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is also known for its picturesque landscapes, including a natural lake that attracts a variety of migratory birds. The zoo's commitment to conservation is evident in its participation in breeding programs for endangered species and its efforts to provide spacious, naturalistic enclosures for the animals. The modernization project, which began in 1995, aims to replace old, iron-barred cages with more open and natural habitats, enhancing the well-being of the animals and the overall visitor experience.
