Tikona
Tikona Fort, also known as Vitandgad, is a triangular-shaped hill fort near Kamshet in the Pune district of Maharashtra, standing about 3,500 feet above sea level. Its strategic location made it an important stronghold in the Pawna Maval region, controlling trade routes and serving as a military base alongside nearby forts like Lohagad, Tung, and Visapur.
The fort was initially captured by Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I of the Nizam Shahi dynasty in 1585, but it was taken over by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1657 as part of his efforts to consolidate the Konkan region.
Tikona has witnessed significant historical events, including being briefly held by the Mughals after the Treaty of Purandar in 1665 before being recaptured by the Marathas, and a battle with the British in 1818. Today, it is a popular trekking destination known for its large gates, water tanks, several temples including Trimbakeshwar Mahadev, and panoramic views of Pawna Lake and surrounding forts.
The trek to Tikona Fort offers a mix of adventure, natural beauty, and rich history, making it a favorite among trekkers and history enthusiasts alike.
