Trymbakgad, also known as Brahmagiri Fort, is an important historical hill fort located about 30 kilometers from Nashik, Maharashtra. It sits on a hill adjoining the famous Trimbakeshwar temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and is associated with Hindu mythology involving Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva.
The fort dates back to the period of the Yadavas of Devgiri and saw control by various rulers including the Bahamani sultans, Nizamshahi rulers, Mughals, and the Marathas. In 1670, the fort was captured by Peshwa Moropant Pingale under Shivaji Maharaj’s leadership. It witnessed numerous battles and sieges, especially between the Mughals and Marathas, until it finally came under British control in 1818. The fort ruins include rock-cut steps, water tanks, and a Hanuman idol carved into stone, offering panoramic views and historical insight.
The base village is Trymbakeshwar, which also serves as a starting point for trekking to the fort, making it both a spiritual and historical destination.
