Udgir Fort
Udgir Fort, located in Latur district, Maharashtra, is a 12th-century fortress built before the Bahmani Sultanate era and named after the Hindu saint Udaygiri Rishi. It is known for its quadrilateral layout, deep trenches, and thick double walls with several bastions, offering strong defense against invaders.
The fort played a significant role in the historic Battle of Udgir in 1760 where the Marathas, led by Sadashivrao Bhau, defeated the Nizam of Hyderabad, leading to the Treaty of Udgir. The fort contains palaces, mosques, inscriptions in Arabic and Persian, underground tunnels possibly connecting to other forts, and the samadhi of Udaygiri Maharaj located deep underground.
It was prominently used as a military base by the Marathas until 1818 and later came under British and Nizam control. Today, Udgir Fort stands as a symbol of regional history and architectural heritage, attracting tourists and history enthusiasts.
