Vanadurga Fort, located in Vanadurga village in Shahapur taluk of Yadgir district, Karnataka, was built by Krishnappa Nayaka of the Shorapur Nayaka dynasty.
The fort originally served as a military outpost for a small unit of the royal army and was surrounded by dense forest, which inspired its name 'Vana' meaning forest and 'Durga' meaning fort. Although the forest has since receded and agricultural fields now surround the fort, its structure remains significant.
The fort has a rectangular outer court designed to confuse enemy soldiers and a fortified inner court containing various buildings including a well and a temple dedicated to Hanuman. The entrance gate bears Sanskrit inscriptions in Devanagari script, and remnants of military barracks and officers' quarters remain inside.
Local legend says the fort was built as a tribute by the king of Surpur to his queen, Venkammamba. The fort is a notable historical monument maintained by the government and open for visitors.
