Fort
Vasantgad
Vasantgad Fort, located near Talbid village in Satara district, Maharashtra, was originally built by Shilahara King Bhoj and later conquered by Shivaji Maharaj in 1659. The fort is historically significant as it served as a residence for Rajaram Maharaj, Shivaji’s son, after his return from Jinji.
At an altitude of about 2,950 feet, the fort features strong bastions, remnants of temples including one dedicated to Chandrasen—a figure from the Ramayana believed to be Ravana’s nephew—and a Ganesh idol carved into the ramparts. Aurangzeb captured the fort in 1700, naming it “Kili-da-Fateh,” but the Marathas regained it in 1706. The base village Talbid is historically important as the home of Hambirrao Mohite, Shivaji’s fourth Commander-in-Chief, and Queen Tarabai.
The fort offers panoramic views of the Koyna River and is a popular trek for adventure and history enthusiasts, surrounded by natural greenery and rich biodiversity.
