It was a significant power center during the pre-Nizam times, built by the Shorapur dynasty around 1806 AD, and originally surrounded by dense forest, which gave it the name Vandurga (forest fort). The fort features large gateways, high stone walls, fortifications on nearby hillocks including watchtowers, and historical structures such as a mantapa where rulers may have observed nearby lakes and surroundings.
It played an important role during the era of Mughal and Nizam rule, notably during the Siege of Wagingera, which was one of the last forts captured by Emperor Aurangzeb.
