Wellington Fountain is a historic heritage structure located at Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Chowk in the Fort area of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Built in 1865, it was erected to commemorate the visits of Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, who came to India in 1801 and 1804. The fountain is part of Mumbai's Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles, which are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The fountain is designed in a Neoclassical style and is made of basalt. It features two tiers, with the lower tier adorned with eight bas-reliefs depicting the Duke's victories. The upper tier is crafted from metal and includes cast iron leaves. Latin inscriptions on the fountain celebrate the achievements of the Duke, adding to its historical significance.
In 2016–17, the fountain underwent restoration led by conservation architect Vikas Dilawari. Layers of paint were removed to reveal the original basalt structure, and the project received recognition under the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Today, Wellington Fountain stands as a symbol of Mumbai's rich architectural and historical legacy.
